Director of Engineering and Maintenance
Job summary
The Director of Engineering and Maintenance will direct and oversee all engineering and maintenance activities, personnel, and resources in establishing these departments’ strategy and direction to meet the company’s rapidly growing business. The candidate will also provide strategic engineering leadership and direction in support of a world-class plant, and lead $20M in annual capital investment to further develop a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility by performing the duties listed below.
Essential duties and responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily:
- Champion efforts in energy savings and sustainable energy sources in all aspects of engineering and maintenance endeavors to further support Stonyfield’s leadership role in this arena.
- Work in conjunction with Corporate Natural Resources as a team member or leader to achieve the company's goals for energy reduction, sustainable packaging improvements, and waste reduction efforts through preventative maintenance, predictive maintenance, and aligning engineering projects with these key business strategies.
- Direct the strategic planning and tactical implementation of engineering projects and initiatives supporting a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that reflects world class manufacturing capability, while ensuring that daily operations are able to continue to meet and exceed the company’s growing sales demands.
- Develop a strong professional relationship with the organization’s central engineering team to leverage the group’s engineering technology and methodologies that promote a world-class manufacturing facility, capable of meeting the demands of the business.
- Provide engineering expertise, leadership, and counsel to the organization in supporting overall plant performance and operations through the strong management of engineering department resources and effective communication to achieve company goals and encourage a high-performance work culture.
- Responsible for overseeing the hiring, training, development, and evaluation of engineering staff to create a proficient and strong engineering team.
- Develop and direct engineered solutions to promote continuous improvement/Lean Manufacturing initiatives of overall plant operations and line performance, while embracing the organization’s achievement of quality and safety components in manufacturing operations.
- Lead and direct effective interactions and positive cooperation through work relationships between all levels of the organization in areas related to engineering to achieve the business goals of optimizing manufacturing output, quality, scheduling, reliability, safety, cost variance, and waste objectives.
- Champion the organization’s values by leading best practices in engineering that support Safety and Quality initiatives.
- Establish clear and consistent lines of communication with the Executive team. Educate, with with accuracy and timeliness, senior company leadership team on overall progress, issues, and challenges of engineering projects and initiatives.
- Oversee the company's strict compliance to PMO and FDA regulations, OSHA rules, and company guidelines within engineering plans and projects.
- Direct the planning and implementation of maintenance strategies and programs to promote a proactive, skilled, and comprehensive maintenance department that delivers service levels promoting optimal performance of equipment and systems meeting the needs of plant operations.
- Ensure that maintenance and operation of the equipment, systems, and processes for the overall facility meet compliance standards of all external regulatory agencies, to include PMO, OSHA, EPA, FDA, and all other applicable regulations.
- Participate in activities and discussions at the Executive level of the organization to guide the company’s growth and the planning of the business.
- Oversee the achievement of financial budgetary responsibility for all areas of engineering and projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Preferably, an MS degree in mechanical or industrial engineering or another relevant discipline; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience providing executive-level engineering and maintenance leadership and direction in a rapidly expanding food-manufacturing environment (preferably dairy). Exceptional knowledge of food manufacturing to effectively facilitate and lead solution-based efforts that promote safety and quality while efficiently delivering reliable output.
- Must excel at establishing multiple priorities and objectives while demonstrating an ability to prioritize and meet deadlines within specified time constraints in a changing and fast-paced work environment with a positive attitude.
- Lean Manufacturing experience preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills: Must demonstrate calm and rational thinking; promote teamwork and positive interaction with clients, vendors, and other team members; and be able to deliver feedback effectively and proactively to develop others and establish strong working relationships that harbor trust and confidence in peers and subordinates.
- Must have the acquired business acumen to be able to view and understand the bigger picture and help set the company’s strategic direction by participating at the organization’s executive level to ensure that the company’s business mission is achieved and its valued attained in complement with financial success.
- Excellent communication skills. Must to be able to communicate and educate effectively through presentation; and update management and the organization on projects and initiatives via the written word and a fluent use of a variety of media.
- Demonstrated proficiency at managing, tracking, and forecasting engineering budgets and communicating significant changes to finance to ensure that fiscal adjustment is made to accommodate changes to projects and initiatives within engineering.
- Computer proficiency: Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Project; and Auto CAD Lite.
- Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines within specified time constraints.
- Ability to operate in a team environment.
- Ability to adapt in a changing work environment.
